Bruins Folly

Word on the street is all three of the Bruins 1st round picks failed their conditioning test.Part of the test has the players running three – 300m sprints with a three minute rest in-between. For those of you not track savvy, a 300 meter sprint is ¾ of the way around a normal sized track.

Not one of the three met the requirement. Jake DeBrusk (14th overall pick) said he failed because his final rep was timed at exactly one minute (the time allotted) and that the wet surface played an issue.

Wet surface aside.. I would be disappointed to hear this about the players my team just placed our future aspirations on. The players had plenty of time to train and were aware of what was expected of them. During my time in the fire service a man or woman who failed a test they had time to train for was inexcusable. I would like to believe that these professional athletes hold themselves to the same high standard.

Bruins’ General Manager Don Sweeny was not pleased; “To me, it’s a test you can train for, and that’s probably the most indicative thing,” Said GM Sweeny. “If you put in the work in that situation, you may not be the best runner, the most graceful person, but if you put the work in, you should be able to come out the other side with positive results. We’ll have some guys who will have some supplemental work because of that.”

These players are young and have a lot of time to grow to become the hockey players their franchise hopes them to be, let’s hope that this is a strong lesson early in their NHL careers and that they are able to become better because of it.
